Greek media say that in late November, police arrested nine Turkish leftists who planned to liquidate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his recent visit to Athens.
The detainees are members of the Revolutionary People’s Front (DHKP-C), a Turkish Communist group, which has been declared a terrorist group for its attacks on Turkish security forces and Western diplomats in Turkey.
As the To Vima newspaper reported, the group was preparing an assault with rocket launchers, hand grenades and flammable bombs. According to the plan, the group wanted to shoot at Erdogan’s vehicle while traveling to Athens. The weapon was found buried in a mountain east of Athens.
Erdogan visited Greece on December 7th, which was the first visit of a Turkish president to Greece in 65 years.
